First Talk: How effective governance creates better outcomes for AI

AI governance is often framed as an abstract or regulatory issue, often with the fear that it governance stifles innovation and makes the use of new technologies and developments cumbersome. In practice, it is about making AI systems trustworthy, effective, and sustainable. In this talk, we’ll explore the relationship between effective governance moves beyond a compliance burden, and towards better outcomes for both organisations and society, and how good governance is not about compromise.

About the speaker

Dr. Eric J. W. Orlowski is a researcher specialising in the social impact of emerging technologies. Currently a research fellow in AI Governance at AI Singapore, he has a keen interest in the practical applications of governance frameworks--moving beyond compliance and risk management. He has a research background in Science and Technology Studies (STS), with a Ph.D. in social and cultural anthropology, with much of his academic work focusing on the sociopolitical implications of emerging technology. Eric has worked close with AI Sweden, the National AI Office (Malaysia), and holds an adjunct position at the University of Uppsala.

Second Talk: State of AI Safety in Singapore

The State of AI Safety in Singapore report, published in July 2025, presents the first comprehensive analysis of Singapore’s AI safety ecosystem. It demonstrates how smaller, resource-constrained states like Singapore can still play a meaningful role in shaping emerging AI safety norms, even as global discussions often focus on a few countries developing frontier-scale models.
