This briefing: Dinah Awino is an environmental sustainability and green-growth researcher and founder of AkadiEco & Mentorship Ventures. Her research examines how green growth is understood, practiced and institutionalized, including environmental practices and sustainability reporting within manufacturing.

Her Master's research used Kenya's textile manufacturing sector as a case study to examine broader questions of green growth and environmental sustainability. Her work now extends across environmental education, eco-empathy, circular economy, corporate sustainability and ESG.

The journalist question:

What happens when companies are undertaking environmental practices, but the systems for measuring, documenting and reporting those practices have not caught up?

Why now:

Environmental action is increasingly being discussed through ESG, sustainability reporting and corporate accountability. Yet field-level green practices and formal sustainability reporting do not necessarily develop at the same pace.

What reporters often miss:

Sustainability is not simply about whether a company is “green.” There can be a gap between what organisations actually do, what employees understand, what gets documented internally, and what is ultimately disclosed to the public.

Beats: Environment, ESG, Manufacturing, Circular Economy, Education

What you get:

Vet a source without scheduling a lengthy interview. Thirty minutes to decide whether they are right for your story.

A named expert who isn't in the usual databases. Awino is an environmental sustainability source who brings a Kenyan and African perspective to conversations about green growth, ESG, circularity and environmental behaviour.

She published Weaving a Green Future (Eliva Press, 2025) and peer-reviewed research in Frontiers in Sustainability, based on her own fieldwork inside Kenyan textile mills.
