Unplug! Learn Computing Without Computers
Unplug! Learn Computing Without Computers
Part of the CDT Maker Club August Takeover
Discover how pen, paper and everyday objects can help you understand algorithms, computational thinking and AI, without opening a laptop.
Do you need a computer to learn computer science?
Not always.
In Unplug! Learn Computing Without Computers, educator Llewelyn Fernandes will demonstrate how pen, paper and physical activities can make complex computing concepts easier to understand.
This interactive workshop explores how “unplugged” learning can help students and educators develop computational thinking, practise problem-solving and understand how computers, algorithms and artificial intelligence work.
Participants will take part in practical, paper-based activities designed to turn abstract computing ideas into something visible, physical and easier to discuss.
Whether you study computer science, teach it or simply want to understand how computing works beneath the screen, this workshop offers a different way to learn.
No laptops required... in fact, leave yours at home.
What to Expect
During the workshop, participants will:
Explore computational thinking through practical activities
Learn how algorithms can be represented using pen, paper and physical objects
Break complex problems into smaller, manageable steps
Examine how computers process instructions and information
Explore introductory ideas connected to artificial intelligence
Discover unplugged activities that can be used in classrooms, workshops or independent study
Share ideas and problem-solving approaches with other participants
The session will be hands-on and discussion-based, with opportunities to work individually and collaboratively.
