Event Synopsis:

For much of human history, knowledge was shaped and moved by oral tradition, apprenticeship, and the slow discipline of writing. Since then, the sites of knowledge creation have gradually shifted with the proliferation of books, archives, websites and search engines, influencing the way we know and learn about the world. Now, with the adoption of large language models, we are experiencing yet another shift in how knowledge is created and acquired.

The question “how do we know” thus posits two underlying strains of inquiry. First, what are the means by which one acquires knowledge? Second, what is the quality of knowing? In turn, is there a distinction between knowing and learning, and does that distinction matter anymore in this age of computational intelligence?

Yet, sites of knowledge creation continue to exist outside the framework of computation intelligence too. Human conversations, cultural practice and the practical knowledge of making things by hand remain ways through which one may learn about the world. How, then, might everyday human interactions and cultural practices evolve with our shifting habits of knowledge inquiry?

About the Organisers:

The Futures Collective
We're curious about possible futures and what they mean for us. We believe everyone can think about, reflect on, and respond to the futures ahead — wherever they're starting from. The Collective is a small space for sharing the different ways people are doing exactly that.

Lewis is the Founder and Director of Crowdsense, a consultancy that helps organisations engage stakeholders, identify emerging trends, and develop scenarios of the future. Over the past decade, he has worked across the public (PMO, MCCY), private (Grab), and people sectors (better.sg). He also runs The Club, a ground-up platform for members of the public to discuss current affairs.

Caleb is an aspiring management consultant and futurist at Deloitte Center for the Edge, a futures think tank that helps companies stay ahead of disruption by decoding emerging trends. In this capacity, he has delivered the Singapore Space Lab, an exhibition on the potential of space technologies for terrestrial applications. He will be graduating from NTU with a hybrid double major in Business (Finance) and Art History in 2027.

Khai Seng is guided by the belief that transdisciplinary practice is a powerful way to respond to the polycrisis and metacrisis of our times. As the founder of Studio Dojo, he continues to be curious about the integration of design thinking, futures thinking, leadership development and organisational development.
