THE PARLOUR: MAMI WATA
The Parlour is Okrika's film series, named after what we Nigerians call our living rooms -the parlour (queens english and all). We're bringing films that document, question, and imagine African + Black life.
This month's screening is Mami Wata, a film by CJ Obasi. It's set in the fictional West African seaside village of Iyi, the film follows a matriarchal society led by a, revered intermediary, Mama Efe, whose power is threatened when a mysterious outsider brings a conflict between tradition and modern, violent change.
The screening is followed by optional conversation around the question "What does it cost to become yourself in a world that constantly tells you who you are?" Stay for reflection or leave when the credits roll; no pressure.
