Design system: from discovery, tokens & accessibility to production
How Enterprise Design Systems Are Actually Built
In this PixelPerfect community show & tell, Matteo Reggi will walk through the real process of designing an enterprise design system used across multiple product areas.
You’ll see how one complex design system was structured from the ground up including real examples of tokens, component architecture, accessibility considerations, and documentation practices used in production environments.
If you’re a senior or lead designer responsible for scaling products, maintaining consistency across teams, or building design systems that actually work in the real world - this session will give you practical insight into how these systems are designed.
Key takeaways
🧩 Designing Enterprise Design Systems (Beyond Marketing Sites)
Learn how large organisations build design systems that support multiple products, platforms, and internal tools, not just marketing pages. Matteo will walk through the real complexity behind designing systems used across ecommerce, booking flows, internal tools, and customer support platforms.
🔎 Running a Real Design System Discovery Phase
Understand how to start a design system project properly: stakeholder interviews, system audits, and analysing how teams currently use components. See how research helps uncover inconsistencies, technical constraints, and organisational needs before any system architecture is defined.
🏗️ Creating a Scalable Token & Taxonomy Structure
Learn how to structure design tokens and naming systems that scale across teams and products. Matteo will share how workshops helped define primitives, semantic tokens, and component tokens turning a messy UI ecosystem into a maintainable design foundation.
♿ Embedding Accessibility Directly Into Components
Learn how accessibility is implemented inside a design system itself, not added later. The session will cover colour contrast, focus states, accessible names, ARIA labels, and screen-reader considerations that need to exist at the component level.
🧪 Turning Components Into Documented System Assets
See how components move from visual design to fully documented system elements. Matteo will break down how a single button component is structured, covering anatomy, properties, accessibility requirements, and documentation practices used by teams.
🤖 Where AI Actually Fits in Design System Work
Understand where AI helps and where it doesn’t. Matteo will share how AI was used for validation and documentation support, while highlighting why fully AI-generated systems remain risky for complex enterprise products.
About Matteo
Matteo Reggi is a Principal Product Designer with over 15 years of experience across brand design, digital products, and design systems. Originally from Italy, he began his career in graphic design working on brand identity, packaging, and illustration before moving into UX and product design in 2015.
He currently works at a global design agency within the WPP group, where he leads the development of an enterprise design system used by multiple products, designers, and engineering teams worldwide. His work focuses on transforming legacy UI libraries into platform-agnostic, tokenised systems that help organisations scale design consistently across complex product ecosystems.
Matteo is passionate about sharing the real process behind design systems and cutting through the hype to talk about what actually works in large organisations.
