Join us March 19-22nd 2026 to practice Land Tending, Culture Building, learn about and help in shaping the emergent Atlan Social Forestry Cooperative. We’ll gather at Atlan Center in White Salmon Washington on their 150 acre site of Mixed Second Growth Douglas Fir and Oak Woodland areas.

What is Social Forestry?

Social Forestry is a way of learning how to take care of both our ecological landscape and human cultures in a life giving way. It is a place-based approach to consciously growing relationships with the beings of the place we inhabit. Through getting to know the Trees, Soils, Weather Patterns, People, Histories etc. that we live with, we can creatively navigate challenging questions of how to be in a good way and to prepare for turbulent times to come. Many of the techniques that make up ‘Social Forestry’ as taught by Hazel Ward, are most relevant to the Siskiyou Mountain Range landscape in Southern Oregon and adaptable to similar Pacific Northwest landscapes. The ways we craft a basket, craft a ritual, build our homes from materials in our watershed or which plant species we tend to select for, are all connected to our unique ecologies and cultures. Social forestry is often flexible to weave together with other stewardship ways.

Our culture of modernity has caused unprecedented harm to our planetary web of life, social forestry offers clues and practices to bring us back down to earth. Pupils of Siskiyou Permaculture’s Social Forestry Course have been myceliating across the PNW and propagating these theories, techniques, visions to adapt in their place, with their community networks.

Gratitude for our friends at Siskiyou Permaculture - Hazel, Melanie, Karen - for teaching and inspiring this wave of activity around Social Forestry. We highly recommend Hazel’s Book ‘Social Forestry: Tending the Land as People of Place’.
