Beneath The Surface - An Interactive Edible Art Experience by Panpan Gao
Before our eyes lies an unfamiliar world: scattered stones, broken driftwood, and withered branches. This is the aftermath of a great upheaval. The shattered landscape is filled with digital fragments—red, black, purple, brown, and more. Their colors and forms appear virtual and digitized, as if the world we once knew has just been destroyed by a super digital hurricane of artificial intelligence, left unrecognizable.
Look closely, and those digital fragments turn out to be edible. Their strange digital outer skins hold an inscrutable taste, yet beneath the surface lie the familiar flavors of our memories —warm and comforting.
In the exhibition Beyond the Endgame at Qualia Gallery of Contemporary Art, nine artists from different backgrounds and eras each inquire in their own way: “When technology, ecology, and society are all redefining the future, must we simply accept a predetermined ‘endgame’?” In dialogue with this question, the installation Beneath the Surface uses taste as a medium to explore change and rebirth, appearance and essence. It invites viewers to contemplate a possible world after artificial intelligence, expressing the artist’s own hope: our world may become unrecognizable, yet beneath the surface, the warm and consoling core of humanity will always endure.
This food-based installation engages multiple senses (see, taste, smell, touch) and requires active participation, inviting viewers to become sensors and co-creators. It collapses the traditional distance between artist, artwork, and audience, providing an unique art experience.
