Join us for our FREE monthly gathering that is not just a meeting --- it's a stepping stone to advancing your journey with Linux and Open Source Software.
Topic: Own Your Cloud - Sovereignty as a Design Principle
Speaker: Charles Cote
Description: Building and running a system yourself teaches you what a rented one hides, and that knowledge is what turns "own or rent?" into a real choice. That idea sent me from 20+ years of Microsoft-centred IT into Linux, open source, and a hyperconverged Proxmox and Ceph cluster of my own. This talk walks through why I chose that path, how quorum, storage limits, and everyday Linux friction shaped the design, and what I learned about survivability along the way. We will also look at where sovereignty stops being a slogan and becomes a practical question of who controls the recovery. Expect honest trade-offs, a few deliberate compromises, and lessons that apply well beyond the server room.
About Charles: Charles Cote is an IT consultant and solutions architect in Metro Vancouver with over 20 years of experience helping organizations plan, design, and run resilient systems. After a career spent mostly in the Microsoft ecosystem, he is now building his own sovereign private cloud on Linux, Proxmox, and Ceph. He is interested in distributed systems, failure domains, and the human side of technology.
