Advancing Next-Generation Geothermal Innovation for Scale
Geothermal energy has significant potential to provide reliable, clean electricity, strengthen energy security, and diversify countries’ energy portfolios. Particularly as countries seek new sources of clean, firm, and secure power, new geothermal innovations could unlock a critical solution for energy security, development, and decarbonisation. Yet, despite advances in drilling and geothermal technologies, deployment remains constrained by high upfront costs, project development risks, limited subsurface data, and regulatory and infrastructure challenges.
International partnerships can play a key role in accelerating geothermal development and diffusion globally. When countries can combine technical expertise, resources, and institutional support—pairing complementary capacities and strengths across borders—they can mitigate risk, accelerate progress, and ultimately advance geothermal development across regions. This panel discussion will examine the barriers to utility-scale next-generation geothermal deployment and the policy actions national governments and regional institutions can take to overcome them. Panelists will also highlight opportunities for greater international collaboration to accelerate geothermal deployment, drawing on lessons from countries already advancing the technology and identifying practical policy measures to improve project bankability, attract investment, and support deployment at scale.
