Curated by Monica Kinsey, exhibitions at Ours feature Richmond-based artists working in a variety of mediums. Kindling includes graphite drawings by Rae Carlson, photographs by Barrett Reynolds, and paintings by Zach Duke and Nathan Hosmer Nevarez.
The imagery in this exhibition relates to the stillness of winter, the accompanying interiority, and the flames that provide the antidote to frozen toes and long, dark nights. As we move through this season of diminished sunlight, our own inner fires become vulnerable to dwindling, smothered by shadow.
Kindling acknowledges the importance of the fire within; of tending the spark to make it through dark nights of the soul. Just as a bonfire ignites with the aid of kindling and sacrificial logs, so, too, do our own embers grow exponentially once (properly) fed. What makes up the kindling that ignites you? What fuels your inner growth? How can you fan the flames to maintain your ardor through dark times? What do you need to let go of to burn brighter?
Fire begets powerful transformation, and like the phoenix that rises from embers buried beneath a blanket of ash, we reemerge from winter into spring—reforged, reborn, renewed. At the end of one year, on the precipice of another, we release the old to make space for the new. May your inner fire warm you throughout the dark season of winter and may this exhibition do the same.
