The Agora Series
An interdisciplinary salon at Apollo Innovation Commons
In ancient Athens, the agora was never only a marketplace. It was the open ground where the life of the city converged: merchants beside philosophers, citizens beside strangers, commerce and argument unfolding in the same shared space. Ideas did not stay confined to their disciplines. A conversation about geometry might turn toward ethics, and a dispute over trade might surface a question about justice. The agora worked precisely because it refused to keep things apart.
Something in that arrangement has been lost. Our institutions have grown so specialized that they have become isolated from one another. The biologist and the ethicist, the technologist and the artist, the systems thinker and the practitioner rarely occupy the same room, and more rarely still do they enter into any genuine exchange. Expertise deepens even as the connective tissue between fields grows thin. Yet the problems that matter most, the questions of how we build responsibly, how we care for one another, and how we govern the things we make, tend to live in exactly the spaces between disciplines that our silos are designed to ignore.
The Agora Series is an attempt to rebuild that common ground. Each gathering draws together voices from across fields, among them frontier technology, the sciences, the arts, philosophy, and civic practice. The aim is not to have them present in parallel but to have them think in company with one another. We have come to believe that the most consequential insights tend to emerge at the edges, where one field presses against another, and that dismantling silos is less a matter of adding panels than of restoring the conditions under which real conversation becomes possible.
Conversation, though, is only the beginning. The ideas that surface in the Agora do not end when the evening does. They feed directly into the UnCommon Ground Hackathon, our monthly cross-disciplinary build, where the questions raised in dialogue become the raw material for making. Over the course of each gathering, teams drawn from different fields work side by side to prototype, test, and build responses to the problems the Agora brings into focus. It is where thinking together becomes building together. The next UnCommon Ground Hackathon takes place on August 15.
