About Event

"It's fun to have fun but you have to know how!" - Our Motto (from The Cat In The Hat)

Fun Practice 1 was a great success, so back by popular demand we're getting even more ambitious this time!

This workshop is about learning and practicing new ways of having fun. How can we make the city more fun?

We will meet at Sublunar (the listed address, 116 Spadina Ave - unit 204) and warm up with some games. Once we're all activated, we'll go out on to Spadina and continue to play in public, with the goal of being SO FUN that people can't help but want to join in.

Drawing ourselves and others into play is the central theme of Play Harder 2 :) Be brave!

Volunteers and Funcilitators are needed once more, please step forward! Tickets are of course free for contributors. Please email [email protected] to join us and help out

Invite your funniest friend!

Fun Practice: PLAY HARDER 2!

Having FUN is a skill! This is a workshop session for FUN PRACTICE! We'll laugh, play, sweat, and PLAY HARDER! Tangibly improve your life :)

Warm up:

We'll start with stretches and a gentle introduction to the space. A bit of music will help us dance into new shapes and use our bodies to fill space and loosen up.

Mini games:

Funcilitators will lead us through a series of mini games, like Keep-It-Up, Fortnuately-Unfortunately, That's-Not-Your-Name, and other classics and favourites.

Pizza Break and Open Mic:

Take a break, have some water, refuel with a slice of pizza, and shine your eyes for some small experimental performances. Everyone will have the chance to take the stage for a couple minutes each to try something new - workshop a bad joke? Sing a song? Clown burlesque? Up to you! We want to give everyone the opportunity to embarrass themselves as part of this workshop so we can have the emotional experience of it being OKAY and FUNNY! If this scares you, you're exactly who this is for :)

Hit the streets:

We'll take this show on the road, where Funcilitators will run us through exercises and games to help us stretch our fun muscles and practice new skills and bits. Maybe our fellow Torontonians will react? Maybe they'll join in?!?

Cool off:

Once we've had our fill of playing in the public eye, we'll return to the safety of Sublunar. We'll put on some dance music and shake our sillies out. Everyone will get a chance to make little announcements, and we'll get to high-five for being so brave with each other. Maybe we'll do a big OOOMMMMHH? We'll thank each other and go in peace to find our showers and naps before the big party after sundown :)

Note: The party on the night of Oct 18th is a clown rave, Clownpocalypse 2: HONK HEAVEN , for which this workshop is a sort of warm-up. You don't have to hit the rave, but I definitely plan to, and I advise people buy their rave tickets sooner rather than later, here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/clownpocalypse-20-honk-heaven-tickets-1641239334029

Let's do this!

Join PLAY HARDER and deepen your fun practice through a series of skill-building games and exercises. Taking inspiration from theater kids, clowns, comedians, performers and party people throughout human history who all have something to teach us about FUN!

We'll loosen up and put our whole butts into being spontaneous and leaving our fears behind. Commit to the bit and have a great time, and who knows? Maybe you'll leave way cooler than you started??!?

Are you scared? Do it scared! This is your golden opportunity to practice being fun in a safe environment so next time you're scared to make a bit of fun in public, you can fall back on your training and PLAY HARDER! Don't be a spectator in your own life - it's time to be your own main character!

Other notes:

Pizza and clown noses will be provided.

Big shout out and THANK YOU to Sublunar for creating arts space in the city and encouraging a healthy scene to grow! We would be out on the street on our cold wet butts without them, and we are grateful! https://sublunararts.org/

We also give thanks to The Toronto Event Generator! https://torontoeventgenerator.substack.com/

Events like this are difficult and TEG plays an important role in making Toronto fun and cool and sexy. We all pray for long life and good health for Misha and the TEG crew and community.

PizzaDAO also deserves our thanks for supporting Toronto's critical Pizza Culture. Ryan is a Pizza Captain for the yearly pizza party on Pizza Day May 22nd every year, so because Pizza and Ryan are both present this counts as a PizzaDAO training event! Put May 22nd on your calendar and be prepared to show up FUN! https://luma.com/6bew0qc2 and pizzadao.xyz

More Other Notes:

This event will be welcoming people from different crowds, including Sublunar (hurray!), the RyanMeetup (Oops! All Ryans!) PizzaDAO (Pizza Mafia represent!) Swords Club (Fun, Friends, & Fitness) Toronto Event Generator (Get weird with it!) and the invisible college of art collectives. The stranger our demographics, the more diverse our fun techniques, right? Invite your funniest friend and get on a call with them right now so you both get your tickets immediately! This could be one of the most important days of your life, okay?!?!? Don't mess around about this, having fun is serious business!

Call For Players and Facilitators:

Thanks to everyone who helped with the previous incarnation of Fun Practice! Let's do it again!

The workshop series this event is inspired by ('Brunch'!) had three master clowns runnning it, and we want to have even MORE for Fun Practice. Do you have a favourite theater warmup or clown game? Tell Ryan you want to help out and do your favourite thing, and your ticket will be free. Do you have a friend who you can cajole into teaching us a bit? We'll comp BOTH your tickets! I'm ready to lose money on this event if it means we all have an amazing time. Please please please get your fun friends involved!

Also! I want to do a few of these, so please let me know about any friendly theaters/stages :) [email protected]

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to participate?

Yes! This is not an event for spectators! This is a workshop where we're all working at the edge of our comfort zone, so you gotta PLAY HARDER!

Will anything be recorded?

No! No video of the event - we want everyone to be comfortable getting fresh and weird and goofy. Maybe MAYBE we'll take one photo of everyone who wants in with clown noses and big smiles on at the end. We can't control who records us in public, but this event is not about creating content at all.

Isn't this just you copying Brunch at Sweet Action?

Yes! This is directly inspired by how awesome and wholesome and inspiring and growth-inducing Brunch has been. Don't worry if you don't know what that is - you'll get a taste soon! Bruncharoos get in free if you run your favourite Brunch game! I'm trying to go beyond what Brunch made possible. They walked so we can run!

I want to help make more events like this happen, how can I join the Clowncil?

We will be hosting auditions and interviews irregularly, the next is September 30th https://luma.com/2bpr2ost

Am I cool enough for this event?

YES! We love you just the way you are, and we're prepared to love you EVEN MORE once we all get more fun and funny together :)
