An Overview of Gharial Acoustic signaling - with Jailabdeen Ajji Mohideen
IEN Research Spotlights are community events hosted by the India Ecoacoustics Network (IEN), where we highlight works of researchers who employ acoustics to explore and understand their environments. These sessions are free and open to join for anyone with an interest in ecoacoustics and environmental research.
We invite you to the 15th IEN Research Spotlight featuring Jailabdeen Ajji Mohideen.
With over a decade of hands-on experience in field ecology, acoustic and behavioural studies, and community-based conservation, Jailabdeen has played a crucial role in safeguarding India's critically endangered gharials. A National Geographic Photo Ark EDGE Fellow and recipient of the Berlin World Wild scholarship, his work blends cutting-edge science with deep-rooted conservation ethics. He is sharing rare insights from the wild waters of Chambal and the untold story of one of the world's most unique crocodilians. His work combines long-term field ecology with emerging approaches such as bioacoustics and ecoacoustics to better understand this unique species.
Jai has led efforts in radio telemetry, population monitoring, and more recently, in developing protocols to study acoustic signaling in wild gharials—an area that remains largely underexplored.
In this talk, he will be sharing insights into the non-vocal behavior of male gharials that described for the first time and discuss how an acoustics approach can contribute to conservation of this critically endangered crocodilian.
Join us to hear more about Jai's exciting work on gharials. To secure the Zoom link, and any resources, kindly RSVP via this Luma page.
