About Event

Join us for a provocative and soulful kickoff to Hawaii Tech Week: a collaborative reading of excerpts from Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas ("Magnificent Humanity").

Come grab a matcha or coffee at the Hello Again Recharge Lounge, then share your leo and manaʻao.

Together, we will read the Pope's words on technology, responsibility, and the sacredness of the person, then reflect in conversation on not just the encyclical, but what a uniquely Hawaiʻi response to AI can look like. What wisdom from the pae ʻāina—about relationship, stewardship, interdependence, and the limits of extraction—might the rest of the world need to hear?

Absolutely no religious or tech background required.

About Magnifica Humanitas

In May 2026, Pope Leo published a 192-page document devoted entirely to Artificial Intelligence. At its heart is a question that every technologist, artist, parent, and citizen is now facing: in an era when AI can think, write, and decide for us, what remains of human dignity?

The Pope argues that AI must be "disarmed"—freed from the logics of military domination, economic extraction, and cognitive competition—and reoriented toward the flourishing of real, embodied, magnificent human beings.

About the organizers

Hosted by The Novus Group’s Recharge Lounge in collaboration with Pythia, a community intelligence + AI startup (www.thepythia.ai) co-founded by Honolulu-based activist and Zen Buddhist priest, Cristina Moon. The first collaborative reading of the encyclical was held in Oakland, and at least one future reading is planned in LA.
