Learning by Doing (design) by Made by Day
A hands-on workshop exploring how a small object can shape the atmosphere and identity of a restaurant, bar, café or cultural space. Following a short introduction to Charlie Day’s alternative route into design, participants will work in small groups using card, wire, fabric, paper, timber and metal offcuts to create a conceptual wall-light sconce for an imagined interior or table lamps for restaurant dinning tables.
The workshop moves through four stages: beginning before feeling ready, learning through observation, allowing materials and limitations to redirect the design, and finally giving the object an identity connected to a specific venue.
Participants will consider form, shadow, light direction, material, repetition and how one functional element can influence the feeling of an entire room.
Each group will finish by placing its sconce against a wall and presenting the atmosphere, setting and material language it was designed to create.
About Charlie Day
Charlie Day is a London-based designer, maker and founder of Made By Day.design.
Charlie’s practice has developed outside the traditional art and design school route, growing through lighting work, woodwork, material exploration and hands-on commissions. Moving from furniture and individual objects into installations, restaurant interiors, bar fit-outs and spatial design, Charlie learns through making and allows each project to inform the next.
