Statement excerpt:
As the digital age collapses on humanity, society splinters into isolated cubes, each person inhabiting their own room, their own city, their own curated world. Human beings face the paradox created by the conflict between the longing for connection and social anxiety. Technology offers an alternative, evolving from early facilitator to form connections between real individuals to sophisticated virtual AI companionship. As a result, social interactions that were once deeply rooted in one another’s presence and emotional nuance are increasingly redirected into artificial spaces. This shift has raised questions about the nature of intimacy, authenticity, and the human need for connection, particularly its role in navigating hardships like grieving.
Jo Ngo’s latest painting series is a response to this new reality, exploring how contemporary individuals seek guidance and companionship in a time when technology is often more available than other people. Created in solitude in a suburban landscape where grass still grows wild among unfinished luxury homes, her work is both personal and symbolic. Drawing inspiration from AI-assisted tarot readings and fairy tale motifs, the figures in her paintings embody The Fool’s many facets: the naïve seeker, the wounded traveler, and ultimately, the integrated soul who has come to understand that wholeness is not the absence of pain, but the courage to embrace all of its parts.
This exhibition unfolds as an artist’s invitation into the liminal space between reality reality and virtual reality, as the technology and chatbots take over control of our daily conversations.
Visitors are welcomed to step inside, to glimpse, and to immerse themselves in a narrative interlaced with algorithms, fairytales, tarot and en route to their own journey.
