Ethics and Technology Roundtables II: Who Owns The Future?
The Ethics and Technology roundtable series aims to engage a broad audience in conversations about the ethical challenges and opportunities presented by technological change.
Who Owns the Future? Data, Identity, and Intellectual Property in the Digital Commons
This roundtable investigates the convergence of ownership and big data and its consequences for public life. From the erosion of personal identity to international data regulation and the risk of domination between states, this session addresses the vast ethical issues surrounding data privacy. We will examine the public sphere itself, exploring how social media platforms legitimize and exercise power over public discourse. The panel will also consider how artificial intelligence systems and predictive analytics threaten our collective right to privacy by empowering certain actors to infer sensitive information and personal attributes.
Our goal is to clarify the rights and boundaries, from the individual to the international, being redefined in our online world.
Our speakers include Professor Chris Howard, Dr. Cossette Lefebvre, and Phd Student Radheesh Ameresekere.
