Every year, thousands of people arrive at global climate negotiations hoping to influence decisions that will shape the future of the planet.
But what actually happens once you get inside?
Climate negotiations have their own language, politics, procedures, power dynamics, alliances, and unwritten rules. For people encountering the process for the first time, understanding how decisions really get made can be almost as difficult as understanding the negotiations themselves.
In this session, Honorine Isingizwe, New Generation Program Lead at the Climate Leadership Initiative, will share ten things people rarely tell you about participating in global climate negotiations: what matters, what surprises you, where influence really happens, what can be frustrating, and what she wishes more emerging leaders knew before entering these spaces.
The conversation will pay particular attention to participation from the Global Majority. Who gets to be physically present? Who has the resources, networks, institutional knowledge, and confidence to navigate these spaces? What is the difference between being represented and actually having influence?
And at a moment when faith in multilateralism is being tested, there is an even harder question: why keep showing up?
Through its New Generation Program, the Climate Leadership Initiative works with young climate negotiators and emerging leaders navigating precisely these questions. This session is an opportunity to look behind the formal negotiating texts and understand the human realities of participating in global climate diplomacy.

Structured around ten lessons from inside global climate negotiations, Honorine will unpack some of the realities that formal briefings and conference agendas rarely capture.
This is not a technical primer on negotiating text. It is a candid conversation about how the system actually feels and functions from the inside, and what it takes to enter these spaces prepared not simply to attend, but to participate and influence.
Participants will have plenty of room to ask the questions they might not get to ask in a more formal climate diplomacy setting.
