Salsa Social: Exploring the Roots and Rhythms
We hosted this event last year when Bad Bunny dropped one of the hottest album's of the year. Now in 2026, we’re back to do it again after an incredible performance highlighting the power of joy, love and resilience.
Join Let's Play NYC to kick off our first playdate of the year and celebrate Black History Month at the legendary Nieves Latin Dance Studio in Brooklyn.
This year we’re partnering with our very own salsera, Veronica! She’s excited to co-host and can’t wait to bring the community together to celebrate the Afro-Cuban history and soulful rhythms that built the NY salsa scene. Join us for a beginner-focused session where we’ll explore the foundation of the dance and the communal joy it creates.
⚡️ What to Expect:
A brief vibe check on the Black roots of salsa and a refresher on NY-style footwork (on2).
No partner or experience is needed. Come solo, come with a friend and be ready to dance. We’ll transition into partner work, where we’ll learn how to put those basic steps together.
Afterward, we’ll head to a nearby bar to keep the energy going and continue to connect with the community.
🕺What to Wear: Comfort is key! Wear sneakers, dance shoes, and dress for movement.
About Let’s Play NYC: We aim to make it a little easier (and more fun) for young adults in New York to explore new hobbies and connect with new people. All under the umbrella of community, play and movement.
About Veronica (Co-Host) Veronica is a software engineer, hybrid storyteller and, like many of us, a late-bloomer artist. Living by the mantra “learning and growing, loving and playing,” she sees NYC as the ultimate playground for creativity. Veronica grew up dancing Afro-Caribbean styles and she currently trains with Baila Society in Afro-cuban, Salsa and Latin Hustle.
"I view dance as a joyful rebellion. I dance to honor my grandmothers who believe it or not, were forbidden to, to preserve our cultures and our histories, and to be in communal joy. I can’t wait to share this space with you. — Veronica
