movie night: Fresh Blood (1996) and In the Middle of The Street (2002)
Join us for an evening to watch Fresh Blood (1996) and In The Middle of the Street (2002) followed by discussion with film maker b.h. Yael.
Fresh Blood (1996): instigated by a return trip to the land of her birth, Yael questions belonging to Israel as her country of citizenship. The work integrates various intersectional considerations of gender, ethnic and racial belonging, and sexuality within the context of Arab (specifically Iraqi) Jewishness, family break up, the politics of Israel Palestine, Biblical narratives, and the assimilation that emigration requires. And then there is belly dancing, a recurring motif and practice, woven, questioned and embraced through a feminist lens.
The Middle of the Street (2002) captures a specific moment of peace actions in Israel/Palestine. The video, counter-images to what we see on the nightly news, involves a journey made at the end of December 2001, to witness these acts of resistance by Palestinians, Israelis and many Internationals.
