Dr. Tanya Tsui : Spatial Data Science for Circular Economy & Bio-based Construction #22

​​​​​​Our Guest: Dr. Tanya Tsui

​​​​​​​Dr. Tanya Tsui is a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), Leiden University, working at the intersection of spatial data science, urban planning, and material transitions. With a background in urbanism and architecture, her work spans two complementary areas: understanding how cities can transition to a circular economy, and developing geospatial tools to advance bio-based construction.

​In her current research, Tanya leads spatial analysis work on the RAW Project, which investigates the environmental impact of digitally fabricated bio-based construction products. Her GIS work maps the availability of these bio-based materials across Europe to support more sustainable and locally-grounded construction practices.

​Alongside this, Tanya has built a body of work in circular cities — using spatial modeling to optimize material flows and reduce construction-related emissions. This includes a postdoctoral year at the MIT Senseable City Lab in Amsterdam, where she quantified housing emissions in the Netherlands, and PhD research at Delft University of Technology, where she developed spatial optimization models for circular construction logistics.
