Becoming is an evening rooted in presence, reflection, and shared creation. A space to sit with who you have been, who you are releasing, and who you are slowly allowing yourself to be. This night is not about performance alone. It is about arrival, listening, and making room.
The gathering is inspired by my photo series Becoming, which follows my friend Hessah as she leaves her home in Saudi Arabia and begins a new life in New York City. The work traces transformation not as spectacle, but as process. Quiet, layered, and deeply human. A reclamation. A remembering. A soft return to self.
The evening unfolds in two acts.
The first act is poetry. We will open with featured poets from Philadelphia and New York, followed by an open mic. Each poet will have three to five minutes to share their work. A digital sign up will be available ahead of time, with limited signups available in person before the start of the night. This portion of the evening is an offering of words, spoken, held, and witnessed.
The second act is sound. We will transition into a communal jam space where participants are invited to bring acoustic instruments if they have them. This is a space for collective creation. Voices, rhythms, poems, and melodies weaving together without amplification or expectation. The intention is purity of sound and shared presence, allowing the atmosphere to guide what emerges.
Come as you are. Bring a word, a feeling, a sound, or simply yourself. This is a space for ideas to land gently, for community to gather, and for becoming to unfold in its own time.
