Building Grids Together: Planning for Transformational Growth
Hosted by SSE, National Grid and Hitachi Energy
Every country racing to electrify faces the same problem: grids need to grow faster than supply chains, standards and skills can keep up.
The UK is tackling this through the Electricity Networks Sector Growth Plan. Network operators and manufacturers developed it through ENA and BEAMA, with government backing. It sets out how Britain will deliver one of the largest grid build-outs in its history, and how to grow the supply chain, factories and workforce needed to do it. Many countries are wrestling with the same questions, so there’s a lot to learn from each other.
This session brings UK network leaders together with European and international TSOs, OEMs, investors and governments. The UK will share lessons from its journey so far, including what’s worked and what hasn’t. We’ll also hear how other countries and regions have approached the same planning challenge.
Discussion will cover:
Demand visibility and supply chains. Longer-term order books to secure transformers, cables and HVDC equipment, and to give manufacturers the confidence to invest in new factories.
Harmonising standards. Lining up equipment specifications so the same kit can be built once and used across borders, cutting cost and lead times.
Skills and workforce. Sharing training, mutual recognition of qualifications and joint pipelines to tackle a shared shortage of grid engineers.
Held under Chatham House Rule, at the REA Pavilion.
