Nature Tech in Action: When the Carbon Story Doesn't Hold- Biodiversity Risk in Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Sustainable aviation fuel gets talked about as a climate solution. But the land it comes from is a nature question too.
When feedstocks for SAF are grown on previously intact habitats, the carbon story doesn't hold up; and neither does the broader sustainability case. Understanding those risks requires biodiversity data that most organisations working on SAF don't yet have.
In this session, we explore how high-resolution habitat mapping and biodiversity intelligence can help organisations understand what's actually happening on the land connected to their supply chains, and make better decisions because of it.
We'll dig into a real case study: a pilot with RAW and LanzaJet that applied Gentian's True Atlas platform and State of Nature Metrics to a SAF feedstock supply chain. What did the data surface? What decisions could it inform? And what does that mean for organisations trying to meet TNFD, CSRD, or broader nature-risk requirements?
This session will cover:
Why SAF supply chains create a nature-risk question, not just a carbon one
How State of Nature Metrics works, and what it can tell organisations about biodiversity impact and dependency
How Gentian True Atlas scales that analysis across sites, landscapes, and supply chains
What the RAW/LanzaJet pilot found, and what it illustrated about biodiversity-informed land-use decisions
How this approach applies to corporates, financial institutions, and others navigating TNFD, CSRD, or nature-risk assessment
Who this is for
Practitioners working on supply chain sustainability, nature-related risk, corporate reporting, or investment decisions who want to understand what biodiversity data can and can't do in complex land-use contexts.
The “Nature Tech in Action” Series
This session is part of NTC’s Nature Tech in Action series, spotlighting how nature-based solutions are implemented on the ground, from community engagement to technology deployment, and what it takes to deliver transparent, trustworthy impact at scale.
