About the guest speaker
Dr. Kem-Laurin Lubin is a researcher, educator, and strategist whose work sits at the convergence of computational rhetoric, AI governance, and equity-centred design, holding a PhD from the University of Waterloo where her dissertation developed the concept of ethotic heuristics: a rhetorical framework for guiding responsible AI design in healthcare and surveillance contexts.
She is the author of two books, Design Heuristics for Emerging Technologies: AI, Data, & Human-Centered Futures (2025) and User Experience in the Age of Sustainability, and has published in the Rhetoric Society Quarterly, with her scholarship consistently centering the rights of women and marginalized communities in algorithmically governed societies.
Drawing on two decades of corporate innovation (lived) experience across multinational organizations, she currently teaches at the University of Waterloo and brings a rare combination of industry fluency and critical academic rigour to questions of AI ethics, human-centred design, and technology policy.
She is the founder of the AI Global South Summit, a platform dedicated to amplifying non-Western perspectives in global conversations about AI regulation, digital governance, and equitable technological futures.
Dr. Lubin's work challenges the field to move beyond compliance frameworks toward a standard of design that actively encodes dignity, accountability, and justice into the systems that increasingly govern human life.
