Indigenous Youth + Kelp Restoration
Join us for a Coastal Defenders Knowledge Exchange! We are offering the opportunity to create your own, personalized seaweed pressing artwork with Scripps Institution of Oceanography Seaweed Scientist Danielle McHaskell. Danielle is a PhD candidate in Marine Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) where she studies phycology, invasion ecology, and community ecology.
Local Indigenous youth will lead us on a tour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier, sharing their research in both Indigenous + academic science in the field of kelp restoration.
The Jen Smith Lab will then lead a tour of the outdoor Seaweed Slab Lab.
Meet at 2PM at Surfside Revelle Family Student Center, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA 92037.
Please let us know how we can support any accessibility concerns. Paid parking is available at UCSD SIO Lot P002 + P003 for $3/hour which is located directly adjacent to Surfside. We recommend purchasing 3 hours. Limited free street parking available. Please ensure to pay attention to street sign rules (i.e., max hours + curbing) and bring sun protection, water and comfortable walking shoes for incline walking. Bringing your own art supplies is encouraged!
All Coastal Defenders gatherings are grassroots, decades in the making + uplift Indigenous values of respect, relationships and reciprocity. We ask that all attendees adhere to data sovereignty principles to protect our work, direct all questions, concerns, etc. to Coach Jackson and follow the directions of Coastal Defenders volunteers to help us all have a loving, inclusive experience. No photography please of any youth, photography of campus is welcome.
