COP Special Session: What It Takes to Lead and Grow a High-Impact Nonprofit
Overview
In the climate movement, impact is often discussed in technical terms like emissions reductions and policy change. Yet behind every breakthrough is an organization — a mission-driven community of people working together to make that change real.
Unlike for-profit companies that measure success in financial terms, nonprofits must define and pursue outcomes that are often intangible and long-term. We navigate resource constraints, shifting contexts, and the human complexity of sustaining belief in goals that may take years or even decades to achieve.
Peter Drucker reminds us that the mission must always come first, and that leadership is tested not in calm but in “foul weather.” And at the center of it all are people: their conviction, resilience, and capacity to turn purpose into performance.
Today’s conversation is about that human side of impact — how we lead with clarity, make difficult choices, and create environments where people can thrive and innovate. Because when our teams are aligned and inspired, our impact moves from short-term wins to lasting change.
