About Event

Description

Robotics software is still harder, less predictable, and more fragile than it should be. As robotics systems grow increasingly complex, integrating specialists across algorithm development, machine learning, controls, and systems engineering remains a major challenge — especially when relying on traditional tooling such as C++ and ROS.

Join us to learn why Rust is rapidly gaining traction in cutting-edge robotics development, and how deterministic, Rust-native tooling could reshape the future of robotics software.

Talk - Copper: The OS for Physical AI

In this talk, Guillaume Binet (Founder, Copper Robotics) shares the journey of building Copper-rs, a Rust-first robotics framework designed to make robot development simpler, safer, and deterministic by design. He’ll walk through the core structure of modern robotics stacks and explain how Copper-rs takes a unique approach by acting simultaneously as a compiler, an operating system, and a deterministic runtime for robots.

Drawing from real-world robotics development, Guillaume will show how Rust enables systems-level performance while addressing longstanding issues such as concurrency bugs, undefined behavior, and integration complexity. Through practical examples, attendees will see how Copper-rs bridges the gap between low-level control systems and higher-level robotics architecture, enabling teams to build more reliable and maintainable robotic systems.

Speaker - Guillaume Binet

Guillaume Binet (Founder, Copper Robotics) has 25 years of experience in tech, with 10 years focused on robotics. Previously, he served as CTO at Skyways (Drones), VP of CORE Platforms at Motional (Autonomous Driving), and VP of Onboard Infrastructure at Argo AI (Autonomous Driving). When he's not working on his startup, he likes to scuba dive, race cars, and restore old electronics (family computers and pinball machines).

Organizers

Ilya Kulyatin is an entrepreneur with work and academic experience in the US, Netherlands, Singapore, UK, and Japan. He holds a BA in Economics, an MA in Finance, and an MSc in Machine Learning. He's a 3x founder, now helping Japan grow the local AI ecosystem through a not-for-profit community, Tokyo AI (TAI), while building an AI-native system integrator and solutions provider, Foundry Labs株式会社.

Máté Kovács has built his career in early-stage deep tech ventures in Silicon Valley and Japan. He has championed Rust in robotics and AI companies, mentoring developers and building Rust teams, and has served as president of Tokyo Rust since 2022. His current focus is trustworthy LLM-based programming at scale, combining systems programming, symbolic methods, and machine learning. He holds degrees in Computer Science (Florida Institute of Technology) and Computer Engineering (Budapest University of Technology).

Supporters

Tokyo AI (TAI) is the biggest AI community in Japan, with 4,000+ members mainly based in Tokyo (engineers, researchers, investors, product managers, and corporate innovation managers).

Tokyo Rust is a community for Rust developers and enthusiasts in Japan, organizing meetups and technical talks around systems programming, infrastructure, embedded development, and the Rust ecosystem.

DEEPCORE is a VC firm supporting AI Salon Tokyo. They operate a fund for seed and early-stage startups and KERNEL, a community supporting early entrepreneurs.
