About Event

A relaxing, step-by-step introduction to Korean folk art painting that anyone can enjoy—no prior art experience needed. You’ll color a pre-drawn Minhwa design with step-by-step guidance in a relaxed, beginner-friendly setting. Perfect for beginners and anyone who wants an easy, stress-free way to experience Korean folk art.

What You Will Learn

  • The symbolic meaning behind classic Minhwa motifs

  • How to color a pre-drawn Minhwa design using traditional Korean color palettes

  • Brush control and layering through the barim shading technique

  • How to complete a finished Minhwa artwork through step by step guidance

How the class works

  • Begin with a quick overview of materials and color setup

  • Watch live demonstrations before trying each step yourself

  • Work in short, guided segments with pauses to catch up

  • Receive gentle tips and adjustments during the process

  • End with time to refine details and ask final questions

  • Open studio access from 2:00 to 6:30 PM (shared basic art supplies for independent work provided)

  • Light snacks, tea, water, and coffee

A few things to note

  • You’re welcome to arrive anytime during the studio access hours to enjoy the open studio, but please make sure you arrive at least 10 minutes before your class start time (3:30 PM, 90-minute class) so you can settle in.

  • During open studio hours, you’re welcome to work on your own project, enjoy light snacks, tea, and coffee, and connect with other creative people at your own pace.

Taught by Stephanie S. Lee
Stephanie S. Lee is a Queens-based visual artist, educator, and nonprofit founder whose work reimagines Minhwa, the tradition of Korean folk painting, through a contemporary lens. She has taught Korean folk art nationwide through workshops, exhibitions, and public programs, and is the founder of KoreanFolkArt.org, an online platform expanding access to Minhwa education.

A DOE-registered teaching artist with the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, Stephanie works with learners of all ages at libraries, museums, and cultural organizations. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Korean Cultural Centers in Paris, Madrid, and Washington, D.C., as well as museums and galleries in Korea and New York. She holds a BFA and MS from Pratt Institute.

This is a welcoming, flexible environment. You’re encouraged to take breaks and move at your own rhythm.

  • Open studio with areas for independent work and guided classes

  • Comfortable seating: chairs, couches, and floor seating with pillows

  • Slippers encouraged (bring your own for extra comfort; a few extras available)

Refund & Cancellation Policy
Tickets are refundable if canceled at least 7 days before the event. Please note that third-party platform processing fees (charged by Luma) are non-refundable, even if your ticket is canceled.

Within 7 days of the event, tickets are non-refundable, as we finalize materials and staffing for the class. If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to give your ticket to a friend. Please have them check in using your name.

In the rare case that the event does not meet minimum participation requirements, we’ll contact ticket holders at least 48 hours in advance with the option to reschedule or receive a full refund (excluding third-party processing fees).
