How our Bikur Cholim tradition has been shaped by Ma'avor Yabok
Join us for a textual exploration of Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick, with Rabbi Emily Katcher. This Ben Zakkai Institute session is designed for anyone who is interested in learning more about Jewish death practices: Jews and those who love them as well as professionals that might be in the role of supporting Jewish families at the end of life.
Bikur cholim is the mitzvah of visiting, helping and praying for those who are ill. It is considered an aspect of g'milut chasadim, the giving of loving-kindness.
The Ma’avar Yabok is our source text for the work of caring for the sick, the dying and the dead; but it is much more than that, as it integrates teaching these practices along with the sources, the philosophical system, and the metaphysical meaning of Chesed Shel Emet. In this class we will introduce the Ma’avar Yabok itself and where it sits in Jewish history, and we will explore some of its treasures as they relate to Bikur Cholim.
