Tracking change: The latest in emissions reporting tech
In Canada, companies and organizations generating 10,000 tonnes or more of emissions must report GHG data to the federal government. But with recent reports suggesting Canada is on track to miss its 2030 climate targets, it’s critical that companies accurately track, measure and report their emissions generated throughout their operations and supply chains.
Several Canadian businesses are working to make this highly complicated task much easier to do. Learn more at the next MaRS Session, an online series that connects ecosystem leaders and investors with promising innovations. On Tuesday, January 20, meet four Canadian ventures developing digital platforms to help companies and organizations:
Track and report their own emissions
Track the emissions of their suppliers
Monitor the emissions of the entire supply chain
Meet the innovators:
Carbonhound
Toronto-based Carbonhound’s digital platform automatically calculates Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions using certified methods. The company’s user-friendly dashboard helps businesses ranging from manufacturing and finance to real estate and food and beverage keep track of emissions. The company can also help users get standardized sustainability accreditation.
EcoClaim
Climate change is driving up the number and severity of property damage insurance claims. EcoClaim, based in Calgary and with operations in Australia, allows insurance companies to track Scope 3 emissions (the combined indirect GHG emissions of a company’s value chain) of vendors and service providers. This tracking software also teaches insurance company partners how to measure, manage and reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
emitiq
emitiq, based in Victoria, B.C., has developed an AI-powered platform that helps organizations achieve sustainability goals. This solution automates emissions tracking, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) compliance, ensuring participating companies are in line with the latest standards and regulations. The company can also help plan and find financing for carbon offset projects, and is working toward a feature that conducts product life-cycle assessment.
Oxia Initiative
Founded in 2018, Montreal-based Oxia Initiative helps companies and organizations track and report emissions, as well as the GHG emissions that have been reduced and avoided. Its platform allows users to track the GHG reporting of partners — handy for consultants, investment firms with different portfolios of companies and accelerators working with startups. The tool is also GHG Protocol and ISO-14064-compliant — industry standards for emissions reporting.
