The ocean sustains life on our planet Earth—supporting biodiversity, food systems, coastal infrastructure, and global trade. Ocean innovation clusters are emerging worldwide as “collaborative ecosystems” uniting business, academia, nonprofits, and government to drive growth in the blue economy while supporting ocean stewardship.
Momentum for ocean innovation is growing globally and locally here in Hawai‘i. This past June, ThriveHI’s World Ocean Month event showcased some of Hawai‘i’s vibrant ecosystem of ocean innovators, spotlighting entrepreneurial efforts shaping the state’s blue economy. We aim to build on this progress, expanding conversations within our state and across the Pacific.
Why Hawai‘i and San Diego?
Both regions are uniquely positioned to lead ocean innovation, connected by direct Pacific shipping, shared challenges and opportunities. San Diego has cultivated its ocean innovation cluster over the years, developing strong partnerships and talent pipelines to support blue economy initiatives. Hawai‘i, with its strategic location in the middle of the Pacific and profound cultural connection to the ocean, is a leader in inclusive and equitable ocean stewardship.
