​​Dr. Edward Grefenstette is a computer scientist and Director of Research at Google DeepMind, where he leads cutting-edge work at the forefront of artificial intelligence. He also serves as an Honorary Professor at University College London, bridging academic insight and industrial innovation.

​​Before returning to DeepMind, Edward held senior research roles across the AI landscape - including Head of Machine Learning at Cohere and Research Scientist and Reinforcement Learning Area Lead at Facebook AI Research (now Meta). Earlier in his career, he co-founded Dark Blue Labs and served as its CTO.

​​With a background spanning Oxford, St Andrews, and Sheffield, Edward’s research explores the intersection of reinforcement learning, language, and meta-learning, all driven by a central goal: building AI systems that learn and reason in human-aligned ways to advance humanity.
