How Global Mentorship Opens Doors in AI Research
Join us for an inspiring talk with Fatima Jahara, a 2023 Fatima Institute alumni from Bangladesh!
Sunday Feb 15th, 12:00PM Pacific Time
Despite having no prior research experience, Fatima was given a research opportunity through Fatima Institute to work closely with assigned mentor Michael Saxon, postdoc from University of Washington. Alongside her mentor, Fatima co-authored Who Evaluates the Evaluations?, a paper published on arXiv exploring AI evaluation metrics. Through guidance from her mentor, she also gained admission to Rutgers University for a PhD in Computer Science.
Hear Fatima’s journey, learn about her research, and gain insight into how global mentorship and structured opportunities can open doors for talented students in low-resource settings.
About the Research Paper
In this event, Fatima will discuss her research, Who Evaluates the Evaluations?, and the key ideas behind her paper, including:
How T2IScoreScore (TS2) tests text-to-image evaluation metrics
Using structured semantic error graphs to assess metric reliability
What her findings reveal about the limitations of current evaluation methods in AI
Challenges Students in Developing Countries Face When Applying to Grad School and AI Research Opportunities
Fatima will also share her perspective on:
Navigating research opportunities from low-resource settings
Building mentorship and collaboration remotely
Applying to graduate programs while outside traditional research hubs
Gaining practical experience and publishing research from a developing-country perspective
Reserve your spot to hear Fatima’s story, gain a global perspective on AI research, and ask your questions directly!
