About Event

The Geminids are here and will be peaking with up to 120 meteors per hour this Saturday night. While most people will watch from their backyards, the Small Steps & Giant Leaps community is gathering to discuss what these cosmic visitors actually mean for humanity's future in space.

Every meteor you see is a reminder that space is full of rocks moving at tens of thousands of miles per hour. Some are pebbles. Some are the size of the rocks that wiped out the dinosaurs. All of them are puzzles we need to solve if we're serious about becoming a spacefaring civilization.

Join us for an evening of meteor watching, mission planning, and conversations about:

  • Planetary defense and why tracking near-Earth objects isn't paranoia

  • Orbital mechanics of meteor showers and what they teach us about navigation

  • In-situ resource utilization and mining asteroids before they become shooting stars

  • Space weather and radiation shielding for long-duration missions

  • The Kessler Syndrome and why orbital debris is humanity's most immediate space threat

Bring warm clothes, binoculars if you have them, and questions about why we're not doing more to protect Earth from the universe's target practice. This is where you'll find engineers calculating orbital debris trajectories, astronomers who've tracked near-Earth objects, and space enthusiasts who know the difference between a meteor shower and a mass extinction event.

Location

We will begin the evening at Fort Mason, across the street from our usual meeting place at the Interval. We may decide to carpool to Marin depending on the level of weather/light pollution.
