Global Disruption for Less: Iran, Maritime Drones, & the Strait of Hormuz
On March 5, an explosive USV struck the tanker Sonangol Namibe off Kuwait. Video has since surfaced of an IRGC underground base showing what appears to be the same class of vessel. Iran supplied this same technology to the Houthis before deploying its own version in the Persian Gulf.
The situation is still developing. This session is for the USV and UUV community to work through it together.
We'll look at the technical picture: detection, classification, C2 disruption, interdiction, deterrence at scale. These are distinct problems and not every solution maps to every layer. Which problem are we actually solving, and what does a viable answer look like at the scale Iran can deploy?
We'll also look at what this means for procurement. Does an event like this accelerate buying decisions? Does it change what navies and commercial operators are willing to pay for? Does it shift the conversation around rules of engagement and autonomous systems?
Ethan will share research on the operational picture. Attendees are encouraged to bring what they know.
