On-the-Ground Actions, Challenges and Considerations for Advancing the COP29 Declaration on Methane Mitigation on Organic Waste
Overview
The COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste identifies five key enabling areas to address waste sector emissions, marking a first step for the global collaboration towards waste methane mitigation. However, since the waste sector is highly influenced by local contexts, countries face a wide range of challenges that affect the implementation of effective methane mitigation measures.
Despite these challenges, various stakeholders are taking concrete actions to mitigate waste sector emissions – with focuses on data-into-action, alignment of waste with NDCs, finding synergies between national and subnational governments and local communities to address waste issues.
Addressing finance gaps, scaling up investment and capacity building are key to ensuring the effectiveness of the COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste.
