Coffee to Canvas: Exploring Coffee’s Journey & Creative Reuse
Join us for a morning of coffee, creativity, & connection as we explore the journey of the coffee bean and the possibilities that remain even after your cup is empty.
Have you ever wondered how coffee makes its way to Minnesota? Or how something often discarded, like coffee grounds, can become a medium for art? Together, we’ll deepen our relationship with this beloved plant and reimagine its “waste” as a creative gift.
Gaby, a roaster from SK Coffee, will guide us through the life of coffee: from where and how it’s grown, to the environmental conditions it depends on, to the processes of harvesting, traveling, and arriving here in Minnesota. This is an opportunity to better understand the many hands, ecosystems, and relationships that make each cup possible.
Reghan, a multidisciplinary artist, will then lead a hands-on creative practice using coffee ink and watercolor. Through guidance in observation and coffee watercolor, you’ll explore how to recreate the coffee plant while experimenting with coffee as a tactile, expressive medium. This is an invitation to play, notice, and create with what is often overlooked.
We'll have all the art supplies you need to play, but feel free to bring additional materials like your own journal and colored pencils!
🌿 This gathering is part of Gifting Grove’s Waste Workshops Series, where we practice recognizing and honoring what is given by the natural world. By transforming what might otherwise be discarded into something meaningful, we shift our relationship from consumption to care. When we name what we receive as a gift, we cultivate gratitude and a natural desire to care for and reciprocate what has been given.
Gifting Grove is a nonprofit dedicated to creating tangible opportunities to participate in a gift economy, where living becomes more regenerative, joyful, and rooted in relationship. Through gatherings like this, we explore a culture where value is measured not by what we take, but by what we share.
