Justice & Inclusion in the Climate Fight: Firebreak Documentary & Discussion
Who's being left out of the growth in green jobs? Join us for a film screening and discussion featuring nonprofit The Forestry & Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP), a national model for genuine inclusion in green jobs.
Firebreak is a 72-minute documentary following two men who met fighting wildfires while incarcerated in California's Conservation Fire Camp program. Despite institutional barriers and mounting environmental danger, they are now training other formerly incarcerated firefighters through the nonprofit they founded upon release from prison. The film has been featured at New York Climate Film Festival, DC Environmental Film Festival, Bend Film Festival, and the San Quentin Film Festival.
FFRP helps lead the way in California by centering untapped talent, in both wildland firefighting and fire fuel reduction work. The film screening is followed by a brief Q&A with the film's protagonist Chief Royal Ramey, and program graduate Ben Fowler. If you want to be informed and inspired on how to bring inclusive hiring into environmental work, join us on Earth Day for this unique event.
Get to know more about Firebreak, FFRP and Chief Ramey through his interview with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.
Event location: REDF offices on Market Street in San Francisco, exact directions sent upon registration approval.
Who should join? Anyone interested in inclusive and second-chance hiring in green workforce; folks with barriers to employment looking to break into environmental work; social enterprise leaders; those hoping to hire overlooked talent at their own organizations; folks who want to learn how FFRP is keeping Californians safer from fire.
