Audio-Reactive & Algorithmic Visuals - TouchDesigner + Pure Data

Join New Media LDN and genre[fatigue] for a hands-on workshop exploring two different approaches to creating audio-reactive and algorithmic visuals.

Across two sessions, we’ll move from accessible visual creation in TouchDesigner to live coding and audiovisual experimentation with Pure Data, GEM, alien and GLSL.

No matter your background, the focus is on experimentation, creativity and developing your own visual language.

PART 1 - Create Your First Audio-Reactive Visual in TouchDesigner

Learn how to build a visual from scratch and make it react to music in real time.

During this hands-on session, you will:

• Create a simple visual using TouchDesigner
• Make it audio-reactive using a piece of music of your choice
• Explore your own artistic style and visual aesthetic
• Learn simple but powerful techniques for creating captivating visuals using accessible TOPs such as Noise and Displace

The workshop will be delivered by CHΛU, an AV artist and member of genre[fatigue] and Algorave London, and Dea, a creative coder and AV artist/VJ with a background in storytelling through visual journalism.

What to bring

• A laptop with TouchDesigner Non-Commercial installed - free to download
• Headphones
• A mouse
• An MP3 file of a track you would like to use for your audio-reactive visual

PART 2 - Algorithmic Audiovisuals with Pure Data

Go deeper into algorithmic audiovisual creation with Pure Data.

During this hands-on session, you will:

• Get a crash course in Pure Data and GEM
• Learn the fundamentals of live coding within Pd using alien
• Construct an audiovisual piece combining Pd, alien and GLSL

The workshop will be delivered by m-onz, founder of genre[fatigue] and previously fake[dac] - a software developer, musician and algorithmic artist working across code, sound and visuals since 2012.

What to bring

• A laptop with Pure Data Vanilla installed - free to download
• GEM and alien installed
• Headphones

Participants are strongly encouraged to install the required dependencies before arriving so that we can maximise hands-on learning time during the workshop.

Installation instructions will be available on the genre[fatigue] website and GitHub.

Come to learn, experiment and leave with audiovisual work of your own, whether this is your first encounter with creative coding or another step in developing your live visual practice.
