This discussion will explore photography’s ‘claims to truth’ by examining a variety of photographs produced from the nineteenth century to the present. By analyzing photographs produced in medical, anthropological, and artistic contexts, we will consider the many contradictory characteristic of photography as a medium that was tied to objectivity, authenticity and education but also had political and subjective aims. In particular, we are interested in exploring how such photographs constructed identities – for the people being photographed as well as those behind the camera.
