🐟 About Mod Jam #03

Introducing alternative controllers to the Doom modding experience, we will be modifying and repurposing the physical interfaces we handle to enter classic WADs — modified Doom worlds from the world’s largest modding library.

Doom piano, toasters, bedwetting alarm, conductive thread, breathing sensors and cameras… doomscrolling has never been so sensual!

The Mod Jam series demonstrates how re-purposing, remixing, expanding and hi-jacking existing games can be channeled for collective expression.

Modding allows us to reclaim agency. It is an act of opening possibilities within an existing system, to change a world using its own rules and constraints - performance applied to gameplay. As a community-led practice to appropriate, tweak, expand and improve the medium, modding can help us let the creative genie out of the gaming industry's bottle.

This event will come in a twin edition with a sister event in Berlin at the A MAZE. Shop-Gallery in early June.

Seize the mechanics of your games, join the Mod Jam movement!

🗓️ The game jam will take place on 28 March (Saturday) from 10:00am — please arrive on time as we'll be sharing critical information in the introduction. We're also organising a pre-jam hang out/field trip Friday 27 March to V&A in South Kensington for Friday Late: Player/Performer along with Studio Playfool (more on that later). You can sign up for this hang out session here.

⚠️ Important notice: Bring your own tools! We will provide some pieces (e.g. switches, breadboards, buttons, pis, arduinos) and we encourage you to bring your own tools. It can be custom controller specific tools such as microcontroller (arduino, esp32s, etc.), makey makey, etc. but you can also repurpose your everyday controllers (keyboard, mouse, gamepad, joycon, etc.) by introducing a new way to interact with them. Here are some examples for making alternative controllers using the ordinary items by Tatiana Vilela dos Santos: 1, 2.

🕰️ Outline

· Recap on ALT-CTRL and Doom WADs (from around 10:30–11:00am)

· Brainstorming

Checklist

· No programming skills required as basic modding (assets/textures) is done through file-swapping into packages that we can run through pre-installed software

· Feel free to bring your own (safe!) alternative controllers in addition to the ones provided on site

🤝 We're collaborating with [[alternative reality]] WEEK! game jam

[[alternative reality]] WEEK! game jam is an international game jam initiated by Shanghai-based collective [[rect*]]repair that starts from a week before Mod Jam. Since they have the presentations on the same day as Mod Jam, we invited their London branch hosted by Studio Playfool to Newspeak House to share the space with us. So you might want to check out what they came up with during this edition of Mod Jam.
