Lunch & Learn - Back Pain & the Biosphere Workshop by Vicki Shaw
Back pain—whether upper or lower—is more common than we think (80% of Americans experience it at some point in their life!), yet no one talks about it!
Pain is signal from your body that something needs to change. We'll learn about how pain might stem from unexpected root causes, how parts of the body move together to function, and how our own bodies mirror the earth's systems and pains.
In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore:
✅ The anatomy of the back—what’s really going on in your body
✅ Basic physiology of pain and why things hurt
✅ How cultural shifts (and which) have made back pain more prevalent
✅ Common philosophies on pain and movement, including the Gokhale Method
✅ Simple, effective postural exercises to combat modern sedentary lifestyles & what you can do for the future for lasting relief
We’ll also be using some props to enhance our exercises—I'll bring a few tools, but feel free to bring your own foam rollers, exercise balls, yoga mats, or any mobility aids you'd like to share!
Disclaimer #1: I am not a doctor. A lot of what I’ll share comes from my deep personal interest in physical therapy and anatomy, along with insights I've learned from Esther Gokhale's work, a pioneer in posture restoration.
Disclaimer #2: You may or may not experience immediate relief from back pain during this workshop. Pain is complex and can be layered, and often requires consistent and repeated exercises to achieve the postural changes that will relieve pain.
