From Data to Sound — A Hands-On Sonification Workshop
Most data is designed to be seen.
This workshop explores what happens when it’s heard instead.
Overview
This session introduces a different way of working with data: through sound.
Instead of using charts and dashboards, you’ll learn how to translate datasets into sonic systems: structures where data drives rhythm, pitch, texture, and behaviour.
This is the same approach used in installations, performances, and immersive experiences, adapted into a focused, hands-on workshop.
To see an example of what is possible to achieve, check DATASONICA, an audiovisual installation turning environmental data into sound winner of the 2026 Data Sonification Award.
Format
• 🗓 Date: Saturday, June 13th
• ⏰ Time: 14:00 – 17:0 (BST)
• 📍 Hybrid Format: Online (Zoom) + In-person (London)
• 👥 In-person spots: max 5 participants
Zoom link will be shared via Luma 48 hours before the session.
What You’ll Do
You’ll take a dataset and turn it into a working sonic system.
Through guided exercises, you will:
• Map data to sound (pitch, tempo, texture)
• Design simple rule-based systems
• Experiment with real-time or generative behaviour
• Build a structured sonification concept
What You’ll Learn
• What sonification actually is (and what it isn’t)
• How to map data to sound meaningfully
• How to design systems instead of one-off outputs
• How sound communicates patterns differently from visuals
• Where sonification fits in real-world projects
Outcome
By the end of the session, you’ll have:
• A working sonification system or prototype
• A framework to apply sound to your own projects
• A new way of thinking about data beyond the visual
Who This Is For
• Designers and creative technologists
• Sound designers and musicians
• Studios exploring immersive / experiential work
• Anyone working with data who wants to go beyond charts
No advanced technical skills required, only curiosity is essential.
Tools
Depending on your level and setup:
Ableton Live and other free browser-based tools.
(You’ll receive setup guidance before the session.)
What Makes This Different
This workshop teaches how to think in systems.
It’s a small group so you get direct feedback, and space to experiment properly.
Tickets
• In-person (London): £150
• Online: £75
