To Engage or Not to Engage? | The Future of AI and Human Creativity in Rhode Island
To Engage or Not to Engage? is a free community salon on artificial intelligence and human creativity in Rhode Island.
The evening brings both critics and supporters of AI into the same room for an honest, structured conversation, based on the belief that dialogue and the state of the landscape improve when both are present.
Participants are invited to arrive as independent thinkers, ready to work through their own positions alongside others in a casual setting.
This first session focuses on two fields:
Writing (Education & Literature): We will explore how AI is reshaping practice for writers, poets, editors, students, and educators
Visual Art: Who can be an artist? What is true art? We will take up questions of plagiarism and authorship, and consider where creative authority is headed for working artists
By the end of the evening, you will:
See AI as a wider landscape that extends beyond chatbots to include its social, environmental, and technological effects.
Discover ways to influence how AI develops as an ethicist, artist, or community stakeholder, beyond the choice of full adoption or full withdrawal
Leave with a sharper set of questions and more context than social media can provide
Gain the experience of thinking through difficult problems with a thoughtful local community
No technical background is needed. This session is designed for an intimate group of practicing writers, artists, thinkers, and anyone invested in the future of creative work.
Talkers and listeners of all backgrounds and age groups welcome! Bring a friend, bring your family!
