AI That Works: Building with Skills
Most AI events talk about what's coming. This one's about what's already working.
AI That Works is a monthly meetup for anyone building with AI in Austin: developers, founders, operators, GTM teams, and the AI-curious.
Every session: live demos from people shipping real things, a hands-on build, and honest conversation about what's actually producing results.
We don't care if you're writing code or using no-code. If you're putting AI to work on something real, you belong here.
This month
How the evening works
We start with a short presentation on skills: what they are, the problem they solve, and why they matter for anyone building with AI agents. You'll see real examples using Apify awesome skills so you know what good looks like before you touch any code.
Then we go hands-on. You'll pick a pre-built skill from our starter kit, run it in Claude Code, and customize it for your own use case. This simulates the real iteration loop that makes skills useful: run it, inspect it, tweak it, run it again.
For the finale, you'll break into small groups and build a skill from scratch. Each group picks a problem, finds the right Apify Actors, and has Claude Code write the skill. Then each group presents what they built — working or not. No script, no safety net.
Bring your laptop.
What you need for the hands-on portion:
We'll be using Claude Code for the interactive build. To participate directly, you'll need:
A laptop with a terminal (Mac, Linux, or Windows with WSL)
Node.js 18+ installed
Claude Code installed (run
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bashin your terminal)An Anthropic account with a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription (sign up at claude.ai)
An Apify account (free tier works — sign up at apify.com)
Don't have all of this? No worries. you can follow along with someone at the event who does. The concepts apply to any AI coding tool.
Apify is the platform behind thousands of ready-to-use tools that give AI agents and apps access to web data, automation, and real world information. But this meetup isn't a product pitch.
It's a community. See what people are building, learn something new, and meet the people doing the work.
