About Event

Today, there is one definition of agency that dominates: the ability to Just Do Things.

Philosopher C. Thi Nguyen argues for another definition of agency: one that is defined by roles, rules, and goals. This is the agency found in games: by providing players with temporary, alternate ways of being, games allow us to simulate what it feels like to pursue a particulargoal, in a particular way, for the sheer joy of struggling to win. In this way, games allow us to try on different kinds of agency.

After all, we're all playing games—the difference is whether we've deliberately chosen to play the agency we're in.
