First Student and Con Edison Advance Electric School Bus Infrastructure in New York City
Project Details & Technology
Partnership & Funding: A $9 million collaboration between First Student and Con Edison, with additional support from NYSERDA's New York School Bus Incentive Program (NYSBIP) and the New York Truck Voucher Incentive Program (NYTIP)
Location: Malta Street facility / depot in East New York, Brooklyn, serving students across Brooklyn and Queens.
Fleet Size: 10 initial electric school buses (some featuring rooftop solar panels), with plans to add 40 more electric buses.
Charging Infrastructure: Uses First Student’s First Charge™ above-ground, trenchless power deployment system, which reduces infrastructure construction costs by roughly 13% to 20% compared to traditional underground trenching.
Smart Grid / V2X Integration: The setup features vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and bi-directional charging capabilities, allowing the bus batteries to store energy and supply clean power back to the Con Edison grid during peak demand or emergencies
