TL;DR

This Ripple explores the full spectrum of methane solutions: from low-cost enteric inhibitors to landfill capture, catalytic destruction, and emerging atmospheric removal technologies. We will be diving into scalable innovations and emerging technologies, and examining how science, policy, and capital can align to tackle one of the largest, yet overlooked, drivers of near-term warming.

Topic overview

Why is the topic relevant?

While carbon dominates the climate conversation, methane is often overlooked, despite being responsible for around 30% of global warming to date and having over 80 times the warming potential of CO2 over 20 years. This session focuses on the full spectrum of methane solutions: from enteric methane inhibitors that offer immediate on-farm impact, to landfill capture and catalytic destruction technologies, and frontier approaches for atmospheric removal. With both near-term abatement potential and long-term innovation pathways, methane is a critical but underfunded lever for climate action with huge potential.

What’s up for discussion?

  • What are the most promising technologies today for preventing, capturing or destroying methane emissions across sectors like agriculture, waste, and energy, and how close are they to scale?

  • Can enteric methane inhibitors offer both climate and productivity gains for farmers, and what does success look like in terms of cost, adoption, and regulation?

  • How should we factor future risks into our decision making, from increasing meat consumption in emerging markets to permafrost thaw, when prioritising interventions?

  • Where does atmospheric methane removal fit in the broader landscape - complement or distraction?

  • How do we evaluate methane solutions through a lens of climate impact, scalability, and co-benefits (e.g. yield, revenue, policy compliance)?

  • What role should investors, policymakers, and buyers play in accelerating adoption of low-cost, high-impact methane mitigation technologies?

Dream outcome

To spark a thoughtful conversation that brings methane mitigation and removal into sharper focus within the broader climate tech space. We would love for participants to walk away with a clearer understanding of the current landscape: what’s real, what’s emerging, and where capital and talent are most needed. Ideally, this will serve as an opportunity to connect researchers, founders, and investors who might not otherwise be in the same room, planting seeds for new collaborations or ventures in this overlooked but high-impact space.

Who should attend?

  • Scientists, engineers and start-ups working on methane mitigation and removal technologies

  • Investors interested in this space

  • Policy or MRV experts thinking about how methane could fit into carbon markets or compliance frameworks

  • Anyone interested in learning more about the methane mitigation and removal space
